Market makers generally try to buy at the current best bid or sell at the current best offer, i.e., they are making a market that is reflected in the current last price. SpletMarket takers are able to place trades immediately. Unlike market makers, takers do not have to wait for other members to match their position on the order book, since they are the ones doing the matching. This is beneficial when you have strong convictions about certain events and want to trade on them quickly.
